What is tallow and why is it in skincare?

Tallow is rendered beef fat. It's slowly melted and carefully strained until it becomes a clean, stable solid. It's been used in skincare for centuries and it's having a well-deserved comeback. The reason it works so well on skin comes down to chemistry. Tallow's fatty acid profile closely mirrors human sebum (your skin's own natural oil), making it one of the most structurally compatible ingredients you can apply. We only use suet, the fat from around the kidneys, because it's the most nutrient-dense and renders the cleanest, least odorous tallow available.

Does tallow hydrate skin?

No, and we'll always be honest about this. Hydration refers to water content in the skin, and no oil or fat can add water to your skin. What tallow does is nourish and seal. It strengthens the skin barrier and locks in whatever moisture is already there, preventing it from evaporating off. If your skin is genuinely dry or dehydrated, applying a humectant first, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or aloe vera, and then sealing it in with tallow will give you significantly better results than tallow alone. We cover this in detail on our Learn page.

How do I use the tallow cream?

Always apply to damp skin. That window immediately after cleansing or after a shower or bath while your skin is still slightly wet. A little goes a long way. For your body, damp skin plus tallow cream is a complete routine. For your face, depending on your skin type you may want to apply a humectant first, then a face oil, then the tallow cream as your final sealing step. Visit our Learn page for more info.

Do your products contain fragrance?

We don't use any synthetic fragrance. The only products we add scent to are our scented tallow creams - Cabin Citrus and Vanilla Orange - which are scented exclusively with pure essential oils.

All our other products contain no added fragrance of any kind. What you may notice is the natural scent of the oils themselves.

Essential oils and synthetic fragrance are very different things. Synthetic fragrance is a blend of chemical compounds (often undisclosed) and is one of the most common causes of cosmetic skin reactions. Our scented products use only named, pure essential oils so you always know exactly what you're applying.

If you have fragrance sensitivity or reactive skin, our unscented products (include the unscented tallow cream) are fragrance free, no synthetic fragrance and no essential oils.

What is sebum?

Sebum is your skin's own natural oil, produced by the sebaceous glands. It's made up of fatty acids, wax esters and triglycerides and its job is to lubricate, protect and waterproof the skin. A healthy level of sebum keeps skin soft and balanced. Too little and skin feels dry and tight. Too much and skin feels oily and is more prone to congestion. Tallow's fatty acid composition is remarkably similar to sebum, which is why it feels so compatible on skin and why so many people find it works when other products haven't.

Is tallow comedogenic? Will it make me break out?

Comedogenic means pore-clogging and it's one of the most misunderstood terms in skincare. Tallow is oleic-acid dominant, and oleic-acid rich ingredients can be problematic for some acne-prone skin types. This doesn't mean tallow will break everyone out. Many people with acne-prone skin use it without issue, but if your skin is prone to congestion we'd recommend patch testing carefully and introducing it slowly. Everyone's skin responds differently and we'd rather you know that upfront than discover it after the fact.

What should I use on my face?

While our tallow cream works beautifully on the face, we recommend our daily face oil for facial use, especially if skin health and targeted benefits are your priority. Our face oil combines five organic, cold-pressed plant oils — jojoba, rosehip, pomegranate, tamanu and plant-derived squalane — each chosen for specific skin benefits including gentle brightening, antioxidant protection and barrier support. The tallow cream makes an excellent finishing step over the face oil, particularly for dry skin or in colder months. For your body, the tallow cream is your go-to.

Does tallow smell like beef?

Not when it's properly rendered from high quality suet. We source our tallow from Ontario pasture-raised, 100% grass-fed cows - already rendered, carefully strained and virtually odourless. Our unscented products have a very subtle, neutral scent that most people don't notice once applied. Our scented versions use pure essential oils only, no synthetic fragrance.

Is grass-fed tallow better than grain-fed?

Yes and the difference is meaningful. Grass-fed tallow has a higher concentration of fat-soluble vitamins, a more favourable fatty acid profile, and higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) compared to grain-fed. The diet of the animal directly affects the nutritional composition of the fat. We source exclusively from Ontario pasture-raised, grass-fed cattle because the quality of the ingredient starts with the quality of the source.

Is tallow safe for sensitive skin?

Tallow's structural similarity to human sebum makes it inherently compatible with a wide range of skin types, including sensitive and reactive skin. Our unscented tallow cream contains just two ingredients: grass-fed beef suet and organic cold-pressed jojoba oil. No preservatives, no fragrance, no water, no emulsifiers. For sensitive skin that has reacted to conventional products, that simplicity is genuinely significant. Fewer ingredients means fewer potential triggers.

As with any new skincare product we always recommend patch testing first. If you are considering using this product on very young children, please consult your healthcare provider before use.

Can I use tallow if I have eczema or rosacea?

Many of our customers with eczema and rosacea have found our products work well for them. The fatty acid profile of tallow directly supports the lipid matrix that eczema skin struggles to maintain. Our tallow cream has no fragrance, no preservatives and no alcohol, which removes the most common triggers. That said we can't make treatment claims and every skin is different. We always recommend patch testing and consulting a dermatologist or healthcare professional for ongoing or severe skin conditions.

Is there clinical proof that tallow works?

Here's what most tallow brands won't say: large scale peer-reviewed clinical trials comparing tallow-based skincare to conventional moisturizers don't currently exist in meaningful quantity. The biochemical rationale is sound. The safety record is long. The clinical trials simply haven't been done yet. We believe in this ingredient, we use it on our own families and our customers consistently tell us it's unlike anything they've tried before. But we're not going to claim clinical proof that doesn't exist. That's not the kind of brand we want to be.

What does the daily face oil do?

Our daily face oil is a combination of five plant oils and vitamin E. Plant oils are an emollient - one of the most concentrated forms of skin nourishment you can apply. Our plant oils soften and condition the skin, support and strengthen the skin barrier, and deliver fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins directly to the skin in their most bioavailable form. Because our daily face oil contains no water, it doesn't need preservatives, emulsifiers or thickeners. Every ingredient is functional and purposeful. When applied to damp skin it also seals whatever moisture is already on the surface so it doesn't evaporate off.

Does a face oil hydrate skin?

No. This is one of the most important things to understand about face oils. Hydration means water content in the skin and oil and water don't mix. A face oil made with plant oils has no mechanism for drawing water into skin cells. What it does exceptionally well is nourish, condition and seal. If your skin is dry or dehydrated, apply a humectant first, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or aloe vera, then apply the daily face oil on top to seal it in. That combination does something no single product can match.

How do I use the daily face oil?

Warm three to four drops between your palms and press into damp skin rather than rubbing. Pressing drives the oil in, rubbing moves it around the surface. Apply after your humectant if you use one, and before your tallow cream if you're layering. Morning and evening application both work well. Give it a few minutes before applying SPF in the morning.

Do I still need a moisturizer if I use the daily face oil?

It depends on your skin. A conventional moisturizer and a face oil do different jobs. Moisturizers contain humectants, ceramides and water-soluble actives that a face oil cannot deliver. A face oil delivers concentrated emollient nourishment that a water-based moisturizer cannot match. For normal, balanced skin - damp skin plus a face oil may be a complete routine. For dry or dehydrated skin, a humectant underneath and a face oil on top will outperform either product alone. We cover this in detail on our Learn page.

What is the difference between hydrating and moisturizing?

Hydration refers to water content in the skin. When skin is dehydrated it lacks water. It can feel tight, look dull and fine lines become more visible. Only a humectant can address this by drawing water into the skin. Moisturizing refers to nourishing and protecting the skin's barrier and supporting its ability to retain water and stay soft and comfortable. Our products are deeply moisturizing. They do not hydrate. Understanding this difference is the key to building a routine that actually works.

What is a humectant and do I need one?

A humectant is an ingredient that draws water into the skin and helps it stay there. Common humectants include hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera. Whether you need one depends on your skin type. Dry or dehydrated skin almost certainly benefits from a humectant applied before the daily face oil or the tallow cream. Normal balanced skin may do fine with just damp skin and the face oil. Oily skin can also benefit from a lightweight humectant. Oily skin can be dehydrated too, and when it is the skin often overproduces sebum to compensate.

What is an emollient and what does it do?

An emollient softens and smooths the skin by filling in the tiny gaps between skin cells. Oils and fats are emollients. They make skin feel soft, supported and comfortable while delivering fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants that nourish the skin barrier. Our daily face oil and tallow cream are both emollients. This is their primary job and what they do best.

What is an occlusive?

An occlusive forms a protective layer over the skin that slows water loss. Tallow is one of the most effective non-synthetic occlusives available. Applied as your final skincare step (especially over a humectant and a face oil ), it seals everything underneath in and gives your skin the best possible environment to maintain itself. Other occlusives include shea butter, beeswax and petroleum jelly.

Can I use your products with my existing skincare?

Absolutely. Layering products is actually the key to getting the most out of both. The rule is simple: apply products from thinnest to thickest, and always finish with our face oil or tallow cream as your final step. They're occlusive and emollient, meaning they seal in everything underneath.

A simple layering guide:

  • Cleanser first or splash face with water in the morning
  • Humectant second — e.g. hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc. (if you use one)
  • Our daily face oil third — pressed into damp skin
  • Our tallow cream or your favourite moisturizer last — to seal everything in
  • SPF in the morning

Using makeup over our products
This is where a little knowledge goes a long way. Foundations fall into two categories, water-based and oil-based. They behave very differently over a face oil or tallow cream.

Water-based foundations applied directly over an oil can pill or slide, particularly if the oil hasn't fully absorbed. If you use a water-based foundation, give your face oil or tallow cream at least ten minutes to absorb before applying. Using a damp beauty sponge rather than a brush helps significantly. It presses the foundation into the skin rather than dragging it across the surface, which minimizes pilling and gives a more seamless finish.

Oil-based and oil-friendly foundations, including many skin tints, balm foundations and natural finish formulas, actually perform beautifully over our products. The oils in your skin and the oils in the foundation are compatible, so they blend rather than separate. If you regularly use a face oil and struggle with your foundation, switching to an oil-based formula is often the simplest fix.

Do you use honey in your products?

No. Here's our thinking on it. Our tallow cream is an anhydrous formula, meaning it contains no water. Honey contains between 14 and 21 percent water and is also hygroscopic, meaning it actively attracts more water from the surrounding environment. Introducing honey into a water-free formula raises the water activity of the product, which can create conditions where bacteria, mold and yeast grow, often without any visible or detectable sign of contamination.

Some brands do formulate with honey at very low percentages and rely on its natural antimicrobial properties to manage that risk. That's their call to make. Ours is this - without formal water activity testing and a validated preservative system we're not willing to introduce that variable into a product you're putting on your skin every day. The simplicity and safety of our anhydrous formula is something we take seriously. We'd rather leave honey out than get it wrong.
